I’m writing this as we sit in the airport lounge in Auckland, fortifying ourselves after 22 hours of travel from Toronto via Vancouver. The 14 hour flight here from YVR was by far the longest flight either of us had ever taken. All in all, it wasn’t too bad although we both came off the plane feeling dehydrated and a little disoriented. A couple of “flat whites” and double expressos later we were back in business.
The trip, so far, has been uneventful, which is the descriptor you dream about when planning travel these days. No Chinese spy balloons impeding out progress, which is good (a sentence that made no sense at all a few weeks ago). On a more relevant note, New Zealand has been suffering one of its wettest summers on record and a state of emergency is currently in effect to deal with the impact of recent cyclone activity. So far (knocks on faux wood coffee table in lounge) this hasn’t impacted our flight schedule, but it is a pretty fluid situation.
If you’ve travelled recently in Canada you will have read about the epidemic of lost luggage- this, of course, has been a major concern for us. We purchased Apple Air Tags and have had the nervous pleasure of virtually tracking our checked bags as they successfully (fervent knocking on faux wood table) navigate the netherworld of luggage infrastructure from plane to terminal to plane (on repeat). Fingers crossed that we will be reunited with said luggage in Brisbane.
Speaking of Brisbane, we board our last leg in a couple of hours. One more flight, this one a paltry 4 hours in length, and we will be officially starting the Australia stretch of our trip. Brisbane updates coming soon.
